Please be aware the popular old adage saying it's OK to open attached files from someone you know or trust is simply NOT CORRECT information. The reason is most spammers and virus senders routinely change the 'from' field in their email program to impersonate someone else, possibly an individual or webfirms you happen to trust!

It's also common for these low-lifes to run a hostile script which scans your Email Programs Address Book and falsely use a name and address inside from the address book as the spam or virus sender to fool everyone.

Protecting Your PC from Viruses, Worms, Trojans, Harmful Scripts!

written by B. Lawson
These days, running a computer that's connected to the-internet is more likely to end in tears than doing splits naked over a live lobster, especially if you've got broadband and wireless. Worms, Trojans, Viruses, script kiddies – there's loads of dangers that can inconvenience you, or even worse – wreck your computer and damage your livelihood. And it's not just protecting your computer from attacks; there's also the problem of protecting your privacy from spy-ware etc.

There are plenty of premium products out there which can protect your computer, but what's available if you're on a budget?

What are the most vulnerable parts of your system?

The bits that interface with the net are all vulnerable, whether that's an email client, a browser and, of course, anything that you download and install. And most of the vulnerable programs are Microsoft. I'm not going to get all political here; I've no idea if Microsoft products are more secure than others, but it is a fact that targeting IE or Outlook Express is a far more attractive proposition for a virus-writer than any other email clients, simply because so many more people use them – so a virus-writer gets to cause more damage. By advocating a non-Microsoft alternative to a product, I'm not knocking Microsoft, just playing the numbers. So please don't email me and complain that I'm bashing Microsoft!

Protecting Your Web Browser

If you are only interested in designing for IE, then that's presumably the only browser you want on your system – but I bet you've got other browsers that you've installed for testing. Personally, I test in IE but surf the web more and more using Mozilla, because it's got fewer people targeting any weaknesses with exploits. There's a beta version of the newest Mozilla available, called Firefox. (Another fast text-and-tables only browser is Off By One, which leaves no cache on the hard-disc at all and is a standalone 1 meg download!). To protect I.E., I make sure that no scripts or Active-X nasties can be dumped on me by disabling Active X downloads or setting IE to prompt me via the options in Tools > Internet options > Security > Custom Level. Because I thoroughly dislike pop-ups that I haven't asked for, I disable pop-ups using the Google toolbar. Some sites are coded to have an endless stream of pop-ups that will eventually cause your browser to crash and burn, and this can be avoided by toggling the option on the Google toolbar: Fight virus and spams, join the war on spam!

The Google toolbar blocks pop-ups. When the toolbar blocks a pop-up, the cursor changes momentarily. Toggling the button above will allow pop-ups on the site temporarily. Internet Explorer, being a Microsoft product, also integrates with ActiveX which can allow unwanted programs to be downloaded, even if you don't request them. There's been scary stories about e-card emails which download nasties when you click to go to the site receive your card: "It includes a hidden text area which contains ActiveX to download a.exe, and overwrite the Windows Media Player wmplayer.exe with it … ". The downloaded exe then records your keystrokes when you're using some popular legitimate Internet banking software, and phones your username, password and account details back to the hacker's computer. Yikes! My advice is to adjust the security settings to the highest possible level – or to use Mozilla for sites you don't trust totally.

There are many products on the market to give your computer the essential protection from viruses, hackers, and privacy threats.

AbuseGov.us (abuseus@gov) is a new anti-virus, anti=spyware and anti-spam web-site with lots of intrusion protection and powerful virus fighting and virus/spyware removal software dedicated to stopping virus infections in your PC caused by spammers and scammers who disguise their virus (1 virus in particular we often fight is named W32.Netsky) as coming from a legitimate U.S. Government related web-site!

Keep in mind spammers and virus senders often cleverly disguise their spams/viruses by using so called "disguised headers" That is when upon analyzing the spam or virus email headers or send-from-address it seems to be coming from someone else, most often a legitimate entity or non-spammer individual!

If you suspect you have got the infamous Netsky-Virus (or any other virus infection) and it somehow seems related to ABUSE.GOV (or other U.S. Government websites), forward the complete email (including email headers), and a note from yourself (complaint) to Abuse Gov.US so we may investigate. contact: INFO at ABUSEGOV dot US

Note: Please do NOT send us the original virus email you received as ATTACHED FILE because as a security precaution we do not accept any attached files. This is a policy you should also consider implementing as an excellent precaution to protect your computer from internet threats.

Keep Your Computer
Running Virus Free

written by J. Somer

Getting a virus means getting sick and no one in their right mind wants to be ill. Well, now that computers have become our close friends, it’s a shock to learn that foreign bodies too can invade them with malicious intent. No, your computer doesn’t get a runny nose or diarrhea. This is a sickness that stops your friend from functioning properly, sick in bed, incapacitated.

There are many ways to approach the protection of your computer. First of all there’s the step of awareness. Be aware of how viruses are transmitted. You can catch them from a disc but in most cases it is through your email system. Check your email carefully. Be very wary of anything that has an attachment. Check whom it’s from and look at the title of the mail, is it something you were expecting? Even if it’s from someone you know, be careful as their computer could be infected and the virus being transmitted without their knowledge.

Next, read the cover message, you can’t catch the disease without actually opening the message. Look at the name of the attachment; remember viruses are written to entice you. Beware of free offers and generally anything from people you don’t know, as well as messages that sound irrelevant to your contact’s usual style. Delete them straight away. Delete, delete, delete. This will ensure you of a lower risk of infection. You can even send the message back to the sender without opening it to make sure it is valid.

Now for the heavy protection: Virus scanning and virus protection software, and rescue discs are all readily available and easily utilized. Some are free, and others are obtained for a very small charge. Most software manufacturers offer subscriptions for spyware and virus updating services, which automatically download virus and spyware protection covering the latest computer and internet-security threats.

There are 2 primary forms of virus scanning software programs: One searches through all your computer files looking for recognizable viral signatures, the other scans your incoming and outgoing emails. Alerts will show you when a file needs to be erased or repaired. If you do receive a virus that none of the software can repair you can send a copy of it to a company like Symantec who will be happy to develop a cure for it.

The main message is not to get too worried about your good friend Mrs. PC getting ill or sick. The humans are on top of the case and they seem much better adapted at fixing their technology than they are at beating the viruses that attack our physical bodies. If only we could cure human virus and illness as easily as we solve the problem of computer sickness.

J. S. Somer is an analyst hoping to show fellow humans how far the computer age has come in terms of its strengths and weaknesses.

Did you know you have more than a 90% chance of being infected by hidden Spyware?

Spyware, Adware and Malware are all software made by publishers to allow them to snoop unseen on your browsing activity, invade your privacy, and also flood you with terrible popups. Users on the-web have a 90% chance of being infected with these applications (according to a recent study conducted by CNN).

How can you know if you are even infected? You can't always tell when Spyware is taking control of your computer, since they run in the background completely hidden. There are programs that let you scan the memory for running Spyware and also scans for other files ready to run and hijack your system.
